Olympics Mathematics - Basketball for Year 2-3

Story:

Welcome to the big leagues! You step onto the shiny court - your heart is pumping through your singlet-clad chest. Your giant teammates run ahead of you with their size 22 shoes. Countdown clock ticks away - tick tock, tick tock. It's a close game - down to the wire. Back and forth from one side of the court to the other. Time to make the game winning shot - can you score the gold-medal winning 3-pointer?

Tools:

  • Playing cards.

  • Scoring template.

Main event

Pull cards to see how many 3-pointers, 2-pointers and 1-pointers you scored in each quarter of the game.

Pro tip: Remember that the two times tables just means you double it.

Pro tip: For 3-pointers, instead of counting by 3s, try doubling then adding one more group. For example, for 3 x 6, double 6 to make 12, then add another 6.

Extension: There's a secret club and you scored the gold-medal shot, so you're in. The next club plays extreme level basketball - no more measly 3-pointers - this league plays with 6-pointers, 7-pointers and 8-pointers. Good luck!

Pro tip: For x6, think x3 and double it, or double it then x3. For example, 6 x 7, think 3 x 7 = 21, double it = 42.

Pro tip: For x8, think double double double. For example 6 x 8, think double 6 = 12, double again = 24, double again = 48. This strategy also works for x4 (double double) and x2 (double).

You could have also tried 6 x 8 as 3 x 8 = 24, double it = 48, using the previous pro tip.

Pro tip: For x7, use turnarounds of all the other strategies. For example, 4 x 7, think double double to use the x4 strategy (double 7 = 14, double again = 28).
