Story:
Does anyone else think tennis is really weird? No, not the short shorts and short skirts. No, not the constant starting/stopping, arguing with umpires, or need for absolute silence. It's the scoring pattern. It goes 0/Love, 15, 30, 40! What's with that? What should it actually be as the final number?
Main event: Draft and, then after checking with the teacher, publish a few new scoring patterns that you think tennis should switch to.
Aim to trick your friends - create 2 truths and 1 lie:
2 patterns that actually work and
1 pattern that does not work (like tennis!). Or
publish 4 by folding an A3 page into quarters - 3 repeating/growing patterns and 1 lie/non-pattern!
Switch with a teammate and work out which pattern is the fake - the odd one out (the tennis Pinocchio)!
Or
Set up a whole-class gallery walk and solve ALL examples created by your classmates, or solve as many as you can in one lesson. Roam other students' galleries and record in your maths book, showing which are the true patterns and which are the tennis fakes.
Which 'patterns' are Pinocchios (lying/not real patterns)?
Extension: Your tennis friends are very on-the-ball. Try creating decimal or fraction patterns, because with whole numbers you have no chance of fooling them.
