Olympic Mathematics - Equestrian Decimal Jump Strategy for Year 4-6

Story: Neigh! Neigh! Time for the equestrian! You need to jump to clear all the barriers and make it to the finish line (1.50) in record time. Tools:

  • Decimal measuring tapes (Top Ten versions that show metres/decimals on side B)

  • Decimal tenth sticks (10cm sticks) OR 10cm lengths of paper drinking straws

  • Decimal hundredth squares (1cm squares OR 1cm grid paper cut-out and laminated) OR 1cm lengths of paper drinking straws

Main event

  1. Make your horse out of a popsicle stick and craft paper (3-minute time limit).

  2. Introduce the materials. The 10cm sticks are tenths because these are 1 out of 10 parts of 1 metre, or 10cm. The hundredth squares are hundredths, because these are 1 out of 100 parts of 1 metre, or 1 centimetre.

  3. Place your horse at zero on the decimal measuring tape - the start line. Player A builds at the top of the measuring tape (north side), and player B at the bottom (south side).

  4. Roll a 3-dot dice for tenths and 6-sided dice for hundredths. Add that many tenth sticks and hundredth squares to your side of the measuring tape.

  5. Record the addition of those decimals (from your second turn) as a jump strategy, jumping tenths, then hundredths, or in the easiest way that you prefer to solve the problem.

  6. The decimal measuring tape provides immediate feedback for your answer. Did you get the addition correct - if so, it will show the same total on your current position along the measuring tape!

  7. Whoever reaches 1.50 (or above) first, wins! However, you cannot win if you have not recorded the full path you took to reach it.

Support: Use whole numbers instead (MAB tens and ones) and flip the decimal side of the measuring tape around so it shows centimetres/whole numbers. Practise regular jump strategy for addition of two-digit numbers up to 150.

Extension: Record the decimal fraction (see the recording sample photos above), not just the decimal for each jump.
