Story:
Welcome to the place value Olympics! Instead of scoring 1 point per goal, you can score hundreds of thousands, or millions, or tens of millions!
Tools:
Sticky labels.
A few craft materials to set up a playing field.
Place value scores recording templates:
Main event
Use 5 minutes (set a timer) to set up your playing field and place value labels. Stick the 'ones' closest to the goals and the 'millions' furthest away, and everything else around the field, with the larger place values further from the goals than the lower ones.
Now, play!
Kick a ball towards the goal from different place values (3 kicks), then score.
Record and repeat.
Remember that if you do not score anything from a place value, you must record a 'zero' in that place, as otherwise the number will be too small. Zero holds the place value and the overall value of the number you scored.
Support: Only include places you are ready to record on your playing field.
Extension: Work out the difference between your and your partner's score each turn. For real challenge, try it mentally (no vertical algorithms).
