Addition Unit 4
All the ways to make the numbers 3 to 9
(trusting the count)
1 of 15 units focused on additive strategies
Place Value Unit 12
Partitioning two-digit numbers into tens and ones
1 of 16 sequential
place value units for the early years
Please note: It is important for teachers to know that our sequential units are intended as a significant support for planning, not as a strict or prescriptive approach. For example, we aim for teachers to continue to use other high-impact lessons that have worked well for them in the past, and other excellent resources. Our goal is to create the best menu of rich learning experiences and collection of open-ended lessons for each concept, however, we want teachers to selectively choose the point-of-need sessions for their class that most powerfully speak to their passion as a teacher and motivate more use of hands-on maths. It is not intended for teams to use every lesson within a unit. Instead, we recommend that teachers selectively choose lessons from the sequential units that best match their current learning intention and students' next learning goals, as well as students' interests, and sessions that the teacher feels confident in being able to deliver.

Feedback from PL schools

“I can't thank you enough for the professional learning you provided our teachers on Friday. You demonstrated so clearly the power of storytelling in Maths and the value of making connections to real life experiences. You showed us how an understanding of place value is at the core of teaching and learning, the importance of consistent anchor language, what feedback can look like, and that differentiation doesn't have to be arduous. Our school has recently begun a journey on the Science of Learning path. All the elements of your presentation linked perfectly to this: explicit instruction, oral language, and multi-sensory learning. Almost immediately on Friday afternoon, I had several emails from teachers expressing how much they enjoyed the day. That says it all.”

—  Ms Jane McLauchlan, Numeracy Leader, Warrnambool PS (November 2021)

Feedback about the unit plans

“Top Ten Maths has provided staff with an understanding of how to sequence the teaching of mathematical concepts, as well as providing tasks to teach students the given concept - a fantastic resource.”

—  Mr Paul Hilton, Assistant Principal, Dandenong North Primary School
